Is Private Label Period Underwear Profitable for Fashion Brands?
Yes. Private label period underwear can be profitable when a fashion brand keeps landed product cost well below retail price, controls SKU count, and sells more than one pair per order. Published market estimates differ by methodology: one 2026 report puts the 2024 global period-panties market at US$138.9 million and forecasts US$354.5 million by 2030, a 16.9% CAGR; a separate 2025 study estimates US$261.1 million in 2024 and US$391 million by 2034. A US$30–40 retail price can leave substantial room above manufacturing cost, but freight, returns, marketing, testing, fulfillment, discounts, and unsold inventory must be included before calling a product profitable.
Private label changes the cost structure because a fashion brand does not need to build a period-underwear production system from zero. A specialist manufacturer may already have absorbent gusset constructions, waterproof layers, existing patterns, material suppliers, sewing procedures, washing protocols, and packaging options. The brand can spend its development budget on fit, colors, sizing, branding, packaging, and sales rather than creating every textile layer independently.
That matters because period underwear contains more components than ordinary briefs. A typical product may combine a moisture-transfer layer, absorbent textile, leak-resistant membrane, body fabric, elastic, lining, thread, labels, and sometimes an extended rear gusset. Moving from one absorbency level to three can also require separate material specifications and prototypes rather than one pattern in different colors.
A factory quotation should therefore describe construction, absorbency level, fabric composition, packaging, testing requirements, MOQ, and Incoterms. A price without those details is difficult to compare.
Market growth provides room for additional brands, although published forecasts should not be treated as a sales guarantee. Research and Markets reported in August 2026 that reusable period panties were worth about US$144 million globally in 2024 and projected US$382.5 million by 2030, equal to a 17.7% CAGR. The same report expects the bikini segment to grow at 18.4% annually.
Those figures also show why market reports need context. Another April 2025 study estimated the broader period-panties market at US$261.1 million in 2024 but projected only 4.2% annual growth through 2034. Different product definitions, regions, channels, and research methods can produce very different totals, so a brand should build forecasts from its own selling price, traffic, repeat orders, and production costs.
An illustrative direct-to-consumer model makes the economics easier to see. Assume a private label brief retails for US$34. The numbers below are an example rather than an industry benchmark.

The US$21.20 is not profit. If customer acquisition costs US$9, expected refunds and replacements average US$2 per sold unit, and promotions remove another US$3, the remaining amount falls to about US$7.20 before payroll, software, photography, warehousing, taxes, and other company expenses. Factory price alone gives an incomplete picture of profitability.
Order size changes the picture again. A manufacturer may quote US$8.20 at 300 units and US$6.50 at 2,000 units. Buying 2,000 units saves US$3,400 compared with paying US$8.20 for the same quantity, but the saving disappears quickly when several hundred units require a 30% clearance discount.
SKU planning deserves the same attention. Two styles × three colors × six sizes × two absorbency levels already creates 72 individual SKUs. Ordering only 50 pieces of every combination requires 3,600 units, even before adding multipacks or seasonal colors. A first launch with fewer silhouettes can provide better size and color sales data before a larger reorder.
Bundles can improve order-level economics because period underwear is usually used as a rotation product. Someone using reusable underwear through several menstrual days may prefer three, five, or more pairs rather than washing one pair every evening. Shipping one parcel containing three products normally costs far less than acquiring and fulfilling three separate customers.
For example, selling one pair at US$34 produces US$34 in revenue. A three-pack offered at US$87 lowers the average selling price to US$29 but raises the order total by 156%. Payment processing, picking, packaging, and paid acquisition do not necessarily increase by 156%, so the contribution per customer can improve despite the bundle discount.
Product variety can support the same buying pattern when each item has a clear use. Light-flow briefs may be used near the beginning or end of a cycle, higher-absorbency styles may serve heavier days, and sport period underwear can use stretch fabrics and a closer fit for running, gym sessions, yoga, or team sports. Separate use cases give shoppers a reason to own several pairs without filling the range with minor cosmetic differences.
Performance has a larger financial effect than it does in basic underwear. A loose waistband on a fashion brief can create a return; leakage during a workday, school day, overnight use, or workout can produce a refund, replacement, negative review, and a customer who does not reorder. Testing therefore belongs in product costing rather than being treated as an optional marketing expense.
Useful pre-production checks can include:

Period underwear came under public scrutiny over PFAS, and in 2023 a US federal court approved a US$5 million settlement involving Thinx and allegations connected with PFAS and product marketing; Thinx denied wrongdoing. The case made material documentation and carefully supported product claims more commercially relevant for brands selling close-to-skin reusable products.
“PFAS-free,” “non-toxic,” “antibacterial,” and similar statements should match the testing scope and documentation a brand actually holds. Marketing language should not go further than the laboratory method supports.
Private label production can reduce development expense, but different customization levels change MOQ and cost. Using an existing factory pattern with a custom label and packaging may require much less preparation than creating a new waistband, custom-dyed fabric, revised gusset length, exclusive print, and new absorbent structure. Each added component can introduce another supplier minimum, prototype round, or production tolerance.
A sports or activewear brand has another consideration: stretch. Adding elastane improves mobility, yet an absorbent gusset contains layers that may stretch differently from the body fabric. A sample can look correct when standing still and perform differently during squats, running, or cycling. Wear testing across several sizes can reveal gusset movement, leg-opening pressure, waistband rolling, and fabric recovery before bulk production.
Sizing can become expensive when it is treated as an afterthought. A range covering XS through 3XL contains seven sizes; three styles and three colors create 63 combinations before absorbency variations are added. Brands that already sell underwear can use existing customer measurements and return data to reduce unnecessary pattern changes, while new entrants may need more fitting rounds before placing a large order.
Wholesale creates a different margin structure from DTC. A US$34 product sold directly provides the full retail revenue before expenses, while a retailer may expect a wholesale price close to half of retail depending on the commercial arrangement. A product that works at a US$7 factory cost for DTC may leave far less room after distributor, retailer, freight, and promotional allowances are added.
For that reason, channel planning should happen before the purchase order. A brand expecting 70% of sales from its own website can accept a different product cost from one expecting department-store distribution. The same applies to free shipping: absorbing US$5–8 of parcel cost on a single US$30 order can materially change contribution, while the same shipping cost spread across a US$90 bundle is easier to carry.
Private label is most attractive when the brand already has customers buying lingerie, activewear, swimwear, maternity products, teen apparel, or wellness products. An existing email list, organic traffic, repeat buyers, and known sizing reduce the amount that must be spent to introduce an unfamiliar product. A startup buying nearly every customer through paid advertising faces a much narrower margin.
Before bulk production, a workable commercial model should contain at least three cases: expected sales, sales 25% below plan, and sales 25% above plan. The lower case should include markdowns on remaining stock, while the higher case should include the cost and lead time of replenishment. Profitability looks more reliable when the business remains workable below the original forecast.
A practical first order therefore favors controlled assortment, documented materials, tested performance, and enough margin between landed cost and retail price to absorb normal selling expenses. Period underwear can carry a higher retail price than basic briefs because consumers are buying absorbency and leak protection as well as apparel. Brands that preserve that price gap while keeping returns, advertising costs, and unsold stock within planned levels have a credible path to profitable private label sales.
